International Cyber Security Summer School focuses on online voting technologies around the world
On June 14-16, the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science hosts the seventh Cyber Security Summer School, which focuses on real-world internet voting systems to provide a comprehensive overview of the technological solutions used and their security aspects to more than 90 participants from 21 countries.
According to the Head Organiser Arnis Paršovs, this year's event, which takes place entirely online, is significant in the context of the current pandemic where the use of traditional voting channels face a risk to voters' health. "It might be surprising to Estonians, but online voting is not used only in Estonia. In the summer school, we will look at the designs and security aspects of the internet voting systems used in legally-binding elections in Switzerland, Australia, Russia and Canada," said Paršovs.
The first day of the summer school is devoted to the Estonian i-voting system. On the second day, we will look at the i-voting in Switzerland and the experiences and lessons learned from the public security testing of the Swiss i-voting system and critical insights from the expert dialogue that took place. The last day focuses on the design and security aspects of the internet voting systems used in legally-binding elections in Australia, Russia and Canada.
The keynote speaker of this year's event is Prof. Robert Krimmer. His research focuses on digital transformation, cross-border e-services, electronic participation and democracy, and e-voting issues, further developing a digital society. In total, there will be 15 speakers from six countries.
