Professional Practice

Master's programme of Software Engineering curriculum includes a Practice module (18 ECTS). The practice module provides an opportunity for students to apply the knowledge acquired during the program. Students have a choice between:
Option 1: An internship of 2 to 3 months in a software company such as Cybernetica AS, Helmes, Microlink and Nortal, or in the IT department of a large organization such as Swedbank and EMT, either in Tallin or in Tartu.
Option 2: A combination of software projects and teaching practice.

The practice module will have to be done under the course "Practical Training" (MTAT.03.206 and MTAT 03.237). Practical Training is a part of the Bachelor and Master curricula of UT, meaning temporary employment in an ICT company or in an educational institution that takes place within the framework of learning and assessment, where students take individual responsibility to learn in the period of 1-3 months (156-468 hours). Practical training can be either paid or unpaid. Successful practice implies supervisor by the company, for efficiency we suggest companies to consider forming task-based groups. After the practical training the student will have to submit and defend a practice report.

Introductory seminar for the Practical Training courses takes place every year in the beginning of September and February. The exact time and place will be sent to all the students via the UT lists. For information about the course(s)  please see the webpage or contact Mr. Vambola Leping (vambola.leping@ut.ee).

Career Day

Every Spring Institute of Computer Science is organizing a Career Day. The purpose of the event is to bring together the students of the Institute of Computer Science and the practical training and career opportunities offered by companies in the field. The event will be held as a fair - companies will do exposition of their materials and can interview students. In addition there will be separate introductions by companies. Students can correspondingly get familiarized with the materials and create direct connections with the representatives of the IT companies.

Career Day 2013 will take place on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 12.15-17.00 on the 4th floor of Liivi 2. See pictures of the previous year.

Legal issues

Students from countries outside of EU usually have a residence permit for study, in some cases residence permit for employment. An alien who has been issued a residence permit for study may take employment in Estonia without a work permit in order to participate in practical training pursuant to the curriculum and in practical training intermediated by a vocational educational institution, institution of applied higher education, university or an international students' organisation acknowledged by the state. Otherwise he/she may take employment in Estonia only on the basis of a work permit but only outside of school hours on condition that such employment does not interfere with the alien's studies. The practical training pursuant to the curriculum in case of Software Engineering students is 18 ECTS (at least 468 hours) and in case of Cyber Security depending on elective courses. In case of paid training it is suggested to indicate in the agreement that the field training is related to the acquirable education.
